In the dark and softly glowing landscape that is downtown LA at night, I have been particularly fascinated and inspired by windows. It's said the eye is the window to the soul, but I also feel that windows in general have special meaning. They can be a barrier that separates the private and personal from the unknown world outside and frame and provide context for the experience of the people on both sides of the glass.
Robot
Los Angeles, CA, 2023
Taken on a long barren stretch of roadway on the outskirts of downtown LA, not far from where pivotal sections of Polanski’s Chinatown were shot. This scene may be what the photographer in me sees when observing certain aspects of my psyche: cracked glass, complexity, rigid consistency.
Tea Room
Little Tokyo, LA, 2023
This typifies for me the experience of the outside observer: Dim light, cloudy and cracked glass. Our ability to see into the experience of others is limited. We feel the complexity that lies further beyond the surface details that we are able to see and can only guess at what is happening inside.
Princess
Historic Core, LA, 2023
Late night on Broadway, in Downtown Los Angeles, this beautiful Princess watches the dark street outside from her perpetual post in the front display of a bridal shop. We communed for a few moments. I’ve wondered what she has seen, how long she’s been there.
Jewelry Case
Pasadena, CA, 2023
When the workday is done, all jewelry is removed from display cases in stores throughout LA. What remains are bare forms that humbly carry the weight of diamonds in waking hours. Naked, simple, pure. Souls unburdened.
Bridesmaids
Pasadena, Los Angeles, CA, 2023
Looking through the great glass shop windows of the old Hotel Green in Pasadena in the LA area one finds scenes like this. An array of beautiful dresses anxiously awaiting their role as participants in one of the most important experiences of a person's life. Silent future bridesmaids.
Shadow Figure
Arts District, LA, 2023
Our internal lives are a deep mystery to those outside ourselves. We can never fully express what we feel at a deep level. We can only hope to have some fleeting contact and understanding of others. Their high and lows, their mundane concerns and fleeting epiphanies are often beyond our reach.
