Ancient cultures knew the importance of symbolism and often these symbols crossed over from the world of dreams into their waking lives, holding power over their collective endeavors and fears as a society. They venerated these symbols in 2D and 3D artworks, many of which had both artistic and utilitarian roles. An example from ancient Greek culture is the sculpture known as the Nike of Samothrace, which in its time served as an offering of thanks to the gods. In my photo-series Nike Visits LA, I explore how this important symbol from the ancient world may still have meaning in our modern times as well as the interaction and intersections between 2D and 3D representational art forms. The series imagines the travels of a 3D reproduction of the Nike of Samothrace that has alighted on the streets of Los Angeles. We follow Nike as she explores the dark corners of Downtown LA, revels in the more exciting parts of the district, and of course, stops for tacos.
